No strain on the hands, and with the right saddle, not so bad on the backside. I can't put both feet down flat at stops. Usually one foot flat and one foot on the crank.

Comments:

I just felt so so much safer as with my old bike I had fallen many times when coming to a stop. When I lowered the seat on my old bike I felt safer, but my legs did not extend fully so the legs became tired very fast. I am 72 this month.

About Me

Comments:

The Townie is a very different type of bike. It's designed so that you're seated in a more relaxed and kicked back position. On most bikes you are pushing the pedals straight down but on the Townie you push the pedals forward more than pushing down. It's somewhat like what you'd be doing on a recumbent bike. What all this gives you is a very comfortable bike. There's almost no strain on your arms, neck, shoulders or back. The tires and front shocks add to the smooth ride. However, this bike has 21 speeds so it's also designed to go pretty fast, especially for a cruiser. I've gotten mine up to 22 mph although I usually ride at 13 mph. I only have 1000 miles on this bike but so far it's held up great. I did have one flat tire (probably a pinch flat) possibly due to me taking a high curb at a fast speed. The bike is lighter than you'd think. I can easily lift it up to put in the back of my truck or on my maintenance stand. Also, I think the aesthetics are awesome. Townies are just really cool looking bikes. This bike has changed my life, because of it I've really taken to cycling and have increased my fitness. My wife liked mine so much that she bought one too. If you're looking for a comfortable bike that you can use for fitness and rides that are usually 20 miles or less then this would be a great bike for you.

I've been looking for a bike like this for years. I wish Electra would do cruisers with 21 speeds, as I really like the looks, but need the gears.

The suspention on the front fork is nice as the streets in our area are pretty rough. We have only taken them out for a few blocks because the weather is very hot both in the mornings and evenings. We plan longer outings when the weather changes.

I bought this bike last year and since have put over 300 miles on it. It is a great bike for riding on paved surfaces. Since you sit in an upright position, there is no pressure on your back or forearms. Not lightweight enough for competition or a lot of hills. The only downside is that I worry about it getting scratched up when I transport it.

            Comments:

Unfortunately, I've reached an age where it's just not comfortable any more to be hunched over the handlebars and leaning on the palms of my hands. The Electra Townie alleviates those issues but still offers a light, attractive bike with quality components. I don't need to tuck-down for aerodynamic racing or anything and I'm not doing any mountain biking so the model I have, the 21D gives me everything I need for uphill, downhill, and in-between. The front suspension and wide tires provide comfort on the road yet also support riding on un-paved surfaces as well. The upright position and forward configuration of the pedals make for a most comfortable and enjoyable ride. Love this bike.
